What is Therapeutic Voice Work?

Therapeutic voice work is a unique and transformative combination of counseling and singing teachings, where the power of music intertwines with the healing benefits of artistic expression. The program combines Bel Canto vocal technique with counseling to nurture vocal talent and support personal growth. Participants not only learn to sing but participate in acting activities, character study, musicianship, improv, somatic experiencing exercises, intensive breathwork and sound bathing.  We strongly believe that the voice reflects our inner self, and integration with counseling helps cultivate confidence, emotional regulation, creativity, authenticity, prosocial behavior and self-awareness.

Origins of TVW

The understanding that singing could be cathartic and therapeutic evolved over centuries through observations and experiences of individuals and communities. Early on, in ancient civilizations, music and singing were an integral part of rituals, ceremonies, and healing practices. Shamans and healers in indigenous cultures used chanting and vocal sounds to induce altered states of consciousness and promote healing. Ancient Greek philosophers like Pythagoras explored the relationship between music, mathematics, and the human psyche, recognizing the emotional impact of music. As societies progressed, the arts, including music and singing, became more refined, and their impact on emotions and well-being continued to be observed and studied. Artists and musicians often expressed deep emotions through their compositions, and their audiences reported feeling moved and connected during performances. Additionally, music was used in religious contexts to invoke feelings of reverence and transcendence. In modern times, research in psychology and neuroscience has provided further insights into the therapeutic benefits of singing. Studies have shown that singing can release endorphins and oxytocin, which are associated with positive emotions and social bonding. It has also been found to activate brain regions linked to emotion regulation and reward processing.
